The DVD also includes all seven episodes plus four behind-the-scenes featurettes. Mare of Easttown: An HBO Original Limited Series is available to buy on DVD & Blu-ray on September 13 and to own digitally now.

Mare of Easttown sees Kate Winslet star as a world-weary, troubled, fragile, but hard as nails detective. Everything about the town where she lives in Pennsylvania is bleak and foreboding. It gets even darker when a young girl is brutally attacked, and later murdered.

Mare Sheehan (Winslet) is called in to find the killer. But in her already delicate state of mind (she lost her son to drugs and suicide, she is divorced, and she has a custody battle going on for her grandson), she is pushed to the edge by the investigation. She is also troubled by the fact that she has been unable to solve the disappearance of another young girl a year prior. She feels guilt, grief and anger. And although we feel for her, we feel her pain and we sympathise with her on many levels, she is also dislikeable at times.

Winslet takes all of this and produces the most real, and nuanced performance of her career. Winslet is brave enough to be ugly - her appearance is unkempt - but it’s her personality and interactions with people that make her ugly at times. Winslet is sublime.
