Get ready for epic fun and super-sonic action when everyone’s favourite hedgehog races home in the blockbuster hit SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, debuting on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD on 8th June from Paramount Home Entertainment. Bringing Sonic the Hedgehog to life in this fun adaptation, it’s easy to understand why this film is a must-watch, and achieved the highest opening weekend of any video game movie adaptation in film history!

Sonic The Hedgehog DVDPowered with incredible speed, Sonic the Hedgehog (voiced by Ben Schwartz), aka The Blue Blur, embraces his new home on Earth. That is, until he accidentally knocks out the power grid and sparks the attention of super-uncool evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Now it’s super-villain vs. super-sonic in an all-out race across the globe to stop Robotnik from using his unique power for world domination. Sonic teams up with The Donut Lord, aka Sheriff Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), to save the planet in this action-packed hit that’s fun for the whole family.

Over the years there have been many video game adaptations, from the good - Resident Evil, to the middling - Doom, to the downright awful - Street Fighter.

I was keen to watch this movie because it stars Jim Carrey whose career I have followed for many years. Ok so this is The Truman Show or Andy Kauffman biopic Man on the Moon but I still enjoy watching Carrey. In Sonic he gets to do a sort of Grinch-like performance.

As the evil Dr Robotnik, Carrey lights up the screen everytime he appears. There are notes of Ace Ventura in his performance. His star quality (and wacky delivery) shines brightly as the rest of the cast simply try to keep up with him.

James Marsden is the everyman cop in a small time town. He does a decent job of acting against nothing... It can't be easy talking to thin air, or as they often do - to a tennis ball on a stick later to be replaced by a CGI Sonic.

Strangely the animators seem to have gone a little retro in their design... Sonic looks more eight bit than 2020 state of the art graphics. I assume the choice was intentional but I'd have preferred a higher rendered hedgehog.... Who by the way when he says "I'm a hedgehog, I would have thought that was obvious"... It's not. He looks more like a lanky blue raccoon. He’s cute, but I think he may be a little too tall. And when he goes into his power-up he looks a little demonic!

I'd say that the history and background story of Sonic the Hedgehog isn't really too deeply examined but hey this is a game where a hedgehog raced through platform levels collecting golden rings. I guess it's not exactly one of the most densely written games, or films.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a fluffy, fun comedy that will entertain younger viewers but also offers adults something to enjoy.

Director Jeff Fowler: Jeff discusses how it was watching an audiences first reaction to the movie, what it was like building a ‘film character’ Sonic rather than a ‘video game character’ Sonic, how it was working with and directing Jim Carrey and what he’d like people to take from the movie.
