Only The Brave is the heroic and true life story of one unit of local firefighters. Their ambitions to become one of the most elite firefighting teams in history leads them on a journey of hope, determination and sacrifice to ultimately save and protect their local community. As most of us run from danger, they run toward it – they watch over our lives, our homes, everything we hold dear, as they forge a unique brotherhood that comes into focus with one fateful fire.

Josh Brolin, Miles Teller and Jeff Bridges is an impressive cast for any film and here they work together well, producing very solid performances. They’re clearly spent time together getting to know one another in preparation for this film and have created a sense of brotherhood between them - perhaps not from the outset when Teller’s character Brendan is something of an outcast as he’s not the clean cut guy that the others are as he has a past as a drug user and petty criminal, but once he’s become one of the team the sense of genuine camaraderie is obvious.

The film is well written and carefully directed by Joseph Kosinski, from a screenplay by Ken Nolan and Eric Warren Singer and it is a very realistic drama about real, human events that anyone can relate to. The firefighting sequences are action-packed and tense although there are a few cheesy lines of dialogue. Shot by Oscar-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda, the film looks beautiful. It highlights the beauty and fear of fire.

It’s not what stands in front of you... It’s who stands beside you.
