Two years after Dawn of the Planet of the Apes comes War for the Planet of the Apes. After the skirmishes of the previous film this time it’s war when the human military comes in force to kill Caesar (Andy Serkis). The assassination of the King fails but leaves the apes with heavy losses. In an effort to keep his apes safe Caesar sends them to safety whilst wondering how to best achieve peace… or is it vengeance he wants?

The humans are led by a ruthless colonel (Woody Harrelson) and Caesar will have to go face to face with him to determine the fate of both of their species and the future of the planet.

Once again the CGI and motion capture is superb and the actors including Andy Serkis (Caesar) and Karin Konoval (Maurice) and Terry Notary (Rocket) bring real life, warmth and personality to their characters.

The direction, lighting and cinematography are all flawless and although I do not agree with some of the ways in which the storyline has developed and I have not fully enjoyed every one of the narrative strands War for the Planet of the Apes and the two films that preceded it are (obviously not exactly unique) but certainly different to most blockbuster films that are made today. It’s very interesting to see a film that is - unlike almost all others - focused primarily on a character that is not human. I’m not sure if this is the end of the series of new ‘Apes’ films - I think it probably is but who quite knows if another film might be put into production off the success of this trilogy of tremendously popular films? Conquest of the Planet of the Apes? Count me in - but on the side of the Apes… obviously. Who wants to side with damn dirty Humans?

Released by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.
