Trash is the extraordinary adventure of three young boys from the slums of Rio de Janeiro.
Carefully and artfully directed by Stephen Daldry and beautifully written by Richard Curtis, Trash stars Martin Sheen, Rooney Mara and three young unknown actors Rickson Tevez, Gabriel Weinstein, Eduardo Luis. It’s rare for kids to be literally picked off the street with no acting skills to appear in big budget films and when it does happen it doesn’t always work to great effect. But when it does work it can be exceptional.
Two young boys, Rafael and Gardo, living in the slums of Rio de Janeiro spend their days searching through rubbish mountains for anything of use in their local refuse dump. They find a wallet and realise that it might be worth a reward if they take it to the police. But when a third boy Rato, joins the group they decide to keep hold of the wallet and try to uncover the secrets that it might contain.
The trio embark on a phenomenal journey as they attempt to hang onto the wallet, evade the police, and uncover the secrets it contains. Also pivotal to the story are a pair of missionaries - Father Julliard (Martin Sheen) and his young assistant Olivia (Rooney Mara). Rooney and Sheen provide good support and some star quality but as you might expect in a film like this it is the three young unknown actors who take the plaudits. And they are very well deserved.
