Laurent Firode started his film career at an early age with animation films shot on Super 8. After completing his language studies in Arabic and Chinese, Firode tried his hand at some fifty or so institutional films and numerous shorts. He then directed seven more shorts, Le Mort du Chanteur de Mexico (1995), Super Bon Prix (1996), Le Cri (1996), La Nuit est Belle (1997), La Cite Raymond-Queneau (1997), Les Astres (1997), and Les Menteurs (1998). He subsequently worked as a writer on two full-length features, one of them, a police comedy, and the other a made-for-television film, Striptease. Happenstance marks his first feature directorial debut.
