Italian film director. He rose to international fame in the 1950s with La Strada (1954), which won an Oscar for best foreign film. Other major films include La Dolce Vita (1960) - a satire on Rome's high society and winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes - and the semi-autobiographical 81/2 (1963).
He began working in films as an actor and scriptwriter. His films, many of which are characterized by their use of baroque imagery and fantasy, include La strada (1954), 8½ (1963), Roma (1972), Amarcord (1974), Casanova (1976), La città delle donne (1980), Intervista (1987), and The Voice of the Moon (1990).
