Biography

Actor, singer-musician and politician Ruben Blades stars as the wealthy, authoritarian owner of a Mexican ranch who takes John Grady Cole in to help break his herd of mustangs. Blades made his acclaimed film debut in 1985 with"Crossover Dreams" He went on to star in "Critical Condition," "The Milagro Beanfield War," "The Two Jakes," "Mo Better Blues," "The Devil's Own," "Chinese Box" and many others. He most recently appeared in Tim Robbins' film "Cradle Will Rock."

On television, Blades can currently be seen in the new hospital series "Gideon's Crossing" as Dr. Max Cabranes. His other television credits include "Dead Man Out" for which he won a Cable Ace Award as Best Actor, as well as "The Josephine Baker Story" and "Crazy From the Heart," earning Emmy nominations for his work in both shows.

A leading salsa musician, Blades gained widespread recognition when he composed and performed for Willie Colon on Colon's album "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly." Working in conjunction with Colon, he recorded "Siembra," salsa's most successful album, as well as several other recordings, including "1985 Escenas," which also featured Linda Ronstadt and Joe Jackson. He also recently starred in the Broadway musical "The Capeman."

A native of Panama, Blades studied law at the University of Panama. He subsequently attended Harvard Law School and received his law degree in 1985
