David O. Russell sorry for Jennifer Lawrence 'slavery' remarks.

David O. Russell has apologised for a bad taste remark comparing Jennifer Lawrence's involvement in the 'Hunger Games' movies to slavery.

The 'American Hustle' director made the remark during an interview at a pre-Golden Globes event last week, but has now backtracked calling it 'a poor attempt at humour'.

He told the New York Daily News: "I'll tell you what it is about that girl - Talk about 12 years of slavery, that's what the franchise is."

"And I'm going to get in so much trouble for saying that," he added.

It appears that he was right, and has now said sorry unreservedly for the off-the-cuff comment.

"Clearly I used a stupid analogy in a poor attempt at humour," Russell said in a statement.

"I realized it the minute I said it, and I am truly sorry."

Lawrence, who as well as starring in 'American Hustle' won an Oscar for her performance in Russell's 'Silver Linings Playbook', will have appeared in four 'Hunger Games' movies by the time the franchise has wrapped up.
