Reese Witherspoon has finally confirmed one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood - that she is pregnant.

The Water for Elephants (2011) star, who is expecting her third child - and her first with new husband Jim Toth - spilled the beans when she was honoured with the Renaissance Award at the Gene Siskel Film Centre of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

"I'm very excited. But frankly I'm feeling very round tonight," she told the Chicago Sun-Times about the impending birth.

While Reese declined to reveal further details about the pregnancy, she did admit that she is planning to take a break from acting to enjoy motherhood again.

"I'm going to take a little time off - and go have a baby," she added.

The expectant mum, who is shooting Devil's Knot with Colin Firth, also said she has a growing appetite now that she's eating for two, joking: "I'm always feeling like I'd like to eat everything in sight!"

Reese, who married talent agent Jim in March 2011, has two children - 12-year-old Ava and Deacon, eight - with ex-husband Ryan Philippe.
