Miley Cyrus has become engaged to her film actor boyfriend Liam Hemsworth, it has been announced.

The former Hannah Montana star said yes to the Hunger Games, The (2012) actor after he proposed with a 3.5-carat diamond ring from jeweller Neil Lane on May 31.

Cyrus , 19, told People magazine said: "I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam."

She has since tweeted : "Life is beautiful".

The news quickly became one of the world's top trends on Twitter, bringing thousands of congratulations from fans, as well as questions over the wisdom of settling down so young.

Cyrus and Hemsworth have been dating on and off since meeting in 2009 on the set of film romance Last Song, The (2010).

"I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Cyrus told People magazine.

"Thank you for all the love today. I'm happy to share this news with you all. I feel like all my dreams are coming true," the young star posted on Twitter.

Cyrus's father, country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, who starred with her on "Hannah Montana", said he was delighted.

Australian Hemsworth , 22, began his career acting in Neighbours playing wheelchair-bound Josh Taylor before trying his luck in Hollywood.

He said: "What happened happened and we've been together since."

"She makes me really happy. When you start, you want to be professional, but when you're filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you're not human if you don't feel something."
