Mel Gibson's action movie Apocalypto has enjoyed the highest opening weekend box office figure for a foreign language film in the UK.

The film about the turbulent days of the Mayan civilisation took £1.36 million.

The previous record holders were Hero, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Amelie.

Apocalypto is spoken in Mayan dialect, although it has English subtitles.
