Reese Witherspoon has split from her husband Ryan Phillippe, according to a statement.

After a year of speculation and denials from Reese that her seven-year marriage was on the rocks, it's believed the Oscar-winning actress has approached divorce lawyer Robert Kaufman.

Mr Kaufman has previously worked for both Jennifer Aniston and Lisa-Marie Presley.

Back in November 2005, it was revealed that Reese, 30, and Ryan, 32, were having counselling.

However, Reese said: "What marriage isn't a journey? Nobody's perfect."

But in May 2006 she said: "Ryan and I have a great marriage. I see him as not only my husband but my best friend."

However, it appears that their problems have not gone away.

A statement released on the couple's behalf said: "We are saddened to announce that Reese and Ryan have decided to formally separate.

"They remain committed to their family and we ask that you respect their privacy and the safety of their children."

Reese and Ryan met at her 21st birthday party in 1997 and co-starred in the movie Cruel Intentions two years later.

They have two children, Ava, seven, and Deacon, three.
