Mel makes public Apology

Hollywood star Mel Gibson has made a public apology for his behaviour after being arrested for drink driving.

The Lethal Weapon star said he made "despicable" comments and had disgraced himself and his family.

Mel was caught driving at 80mph in a 50mph zone in Malibu on Friday morning.

He failed police tests, including a breathalyser one.

Arresting officers were reportedly asked to remove certain threatening and anti-Semitic comments made by Mel from their report, but they were leaked to the press.

In a statement, the actor said: "I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable.

"
The arresting officer was just doing his job and I feel fortunate that I was apprehended before I caused injury to any other person.

"I disgraced myself and my family with my behaviour and for that I am truly sorry.

"
I have battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse."

Mel was charged with drink driving and released after paying $5,000 (£2,680) bail.
