Stars shine at the Oscars

Reese Witherspoon has won the best actress Oscar at this year's ceremony.

She won the gong for her role as June Carter in Walk the Line.

Picking up her award she said: "Oh my goodness, I never thought I would be up here in my whole life.

"
My grandmother was my inspiration, and she taught me to have strength and self-respect and never to give those things away. Those were qualities I saw in June Carter... People used to ask how she was and she would say, 'I'm just trying to matter'.

"I know what she means. I'm just trying to matter."

Phillip Seymour Hoffman won the best actor Oscar for his role in Capote.

Rachel Weisz was named best supporting actress for The Constant Gardener and George Clooney won the best supporting actor Oscar for Syriana.

Crash was the shock winner of the best film award ahead of bookies favourite Brokeback Mountain.

Brokeback Mountain won three awards out of eight nominations, including best director for Ang Lee, while Memoirs of a Geisha and King Kong also picked up three awards in more technical categories.

Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit picked up best animated feature film.
