Oscars: Brokeback Riding High

Brokeback Mountain (2005) is nominated for eight awards at the Oscars.

As predicted, Ang Lee's gay cowboy movie is up for some of the biggest accolades - best film, best director, best actor for Heath Ledger, best supporting actor for Jake Gyllenhaal and best supporting actress for Michelle Williams.

Keira Knightley and Dame Judi Dench lead the British march, with best actress nominations for Pride & Prejudice and Mrs Henderson Presents respectively.

Dame Judi was up for best actress at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards but lost out to Reese Witherspoon for Walk The Line both times.

"I'm absolutely thrilled" said Dame Judi of her fourth Oscar nod. "I'm so happy to be nominated for something I loved filming every single day."

Reese and co-star Joaquin Phoenix as singer Johnny Cash are nominated for best actress and best actor at the Oscars too.

However Walk The Line is not up for best picture, to critics' surprise. The other nominees are Truman Capote biopic Capote, race drama Crash, Steven Spielberg thriller Munich and George Clooney's McCarthy-era drama Good Night, And Good Luck.

George Clooney has two nods - best supporting actor for his role as an undercover CIA agent in Syriana and best director for Good Night, And Good Luck.

Rachel Weisz is up for best supporting actress for The Constant Gardener. She won the accolade at both the Globes and Sunday's SAG Awards.

The 78th Academy Awards are on 5 March, live on Sky Movies.Full nominations list:
