Steven Spielberg is to produce a remake of the 1951 film When Worlds Collide.

The science fiction film, sees a group of people going to another planet to escape a cataclysmic collision between earth and a dead star.

The original film won an Oscar for special effects in 1952 reports IOL.com.

Stephen Sommers will direct the film.
