John Travolta, Mel Gibson and Kevin Costner are all said to be in the running to play J R Ewing in the movie remake of Dallas.

Variety says John Travolta has been widely tipped for the role which was originally played by Larry Hagman on TV.

But it adds that Mel Gibson "hasn't completely ruled out the job", Kevin Costner "wants to see the rewrite" and that Tommy Lee Jones is also in the frame.

The leading candidate for Sue Ellen is Catherine Zeta-Jones, but Demi Moore and Jennifer Lopez are also said to be interested.

Matthew McConaughey and Owen Wilson are both being courted to play Bobby Ewing, says Variety.

Drew Barrymore and Reese Witherspoon are both said to be up for the role of Pamela while Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson or Mandy Moore could play Lucy.

Jane Fonda is rumoured to be in the running to play Miss Ellie.
