Bell tolls for DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio is in talks to star in a new version of For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Troy screenwriter David Benioff is penning the adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel for Warner Bros.

Variety says DiCaprio is interested in playing Robert Jordan, the young American teacher who joins an antifascist guerrilla unit in the mountains of Spain.

DiCaprio won't commit to the project without a director, however, and none is attached so far.

Paramount's 1944 version of For Whom the Bell Tolls earned Oscar nominations for stars Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman.
