Joaquin Phoenix has checked himself in to a rehab clinic for treatment of alcoholism.

His publicist Susan Patricola said: "He was uncomfortable with the way that he was living his life and found the courage to deal with the disease.

Phoenix who plays Johnny Cash in a new film has also starred in The Village and Gladiator reports ITV.com.

Joaquin's brother River Phoenix died of a drug overdose in 1993.
