Oliver Stone defends gay content in Alexander

Alexander director Oliver Stone has defended the criticism of its portrayal of its lead character's bisexuality.

Colin Farrell, who plays the Macedonia leader, speaks softly, has a blond pageboy haircut and sports a mini-toga, kisses two men - a Macedonian soldier and a topless Persian who becomes his lover - full on the mouth.

Despite a steamy sex scene with his wife, Roxane played by Rosario Dawson, the movie appears to show that Alexander's deepest affection is for his fellow warrior Hephaistion played by Jared Leto.

"Alexander lived in a more honest time," Stone told Playboy magazine.

"We go into his bisexuality. It may offend some people, but sexuality in those days was a different thing. Pre-Christian morality. Young boys were with boys when they wanted to be."

Stone said he had no interest in showing gay sex scenes. "You only need five words. Alexander says, 'Stay with me tonight, Hephaistion,' and you get it. If you don't get it, f*** you, it's your problem."]

The movie opens in the UK on January 7.
