Denzel to play Sammy Davis Jnr?

Denzel Washington is planning a movie about the late Sammy Davis Jnr.

The Oscar winning actor will write the screenplay based on the recent biography of Davis called In Black and White by Wil Haygood.

Washington has also hinted he may direct the movie, according to the New York Post.

The movie would concentrate on Davis' early career playing America's vaudeville theatres with his father in an act called the Will Mastin Trio.

Washington's movie will deal with Davis' involvement with the famed Rat Pack hard-living group of entertainers which also included Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

Davis, who stood just 5ft 3ins tall and was self-taught, became one of America's leading entertainers of the 50s, 60s and 70s. He died from cancer in 1990.
