Joaquin Phoenix is to star as Johnny Cash in a movie about the country legend's life.

Reese Witherspoon will co-star in I Walk the Line, as the late singer June Carter, Cash's wife.

Reports say the Hollywood stars will begin filming in June.

The film will tell the story of how Cash rose from humble beginnings on an Arkansas cotton farm through to the fame and troubles that starred his life in equal measure, before his musical revival in his latter years.

Cash died in September, 2003, aged 71.
