Pirates beats LOTR to fans' award

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) was the surprise package at the American People's Choice awards, pipping Lord Of The Rings: 2 Towers (2002) to favourite film.

The awards honour achievements in film, TV and music, and are voted for entirely by the public.

Beyonce Knowles had to settle for a share of the award for favourite female music performer, with Faith Hill, while country star Tim McGraw was the voters' choice for most popular male recording star.

Julia Roberts was named favourite actress - her ninth People's Choice award, reports the BBC.

Friends was named favourite TV show and Jennifer Aniston picked up the award for the most popular TV actress for her role as Rachel in the comedy.

Mel Gibson was voted favourite film actor, while Tom Hanks was named favourite all-time entertainer.

Most popular film comedy went to Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey as a man given the powers of God.
