'Phenomenal' Sales Of New Harry Potter DVD

The DVD of the second movie in the Harry Potter series has become the fastest-selling in the UK to date, following its release on Friday.

Fans bought 1,012,000 copies of Harry Potter and the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) DVD in two days, according to a spokesman for distributors Warner Home Video.

The previous record for the fastest-selling DVD was held by the first Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

The Chamber of Secrets was an instant box-office hit when released in cinemas last November, making £18.8m in its first weekend in the UK and Ireland.

The DVD offers many extra features, including many unseen scenes.

Neil McEwan, managing director of Warner Home Video, said the DVD's success was "phenomenal".

"Expectations were high but we are amazed to see that these have been exceeded," Mr McEwan added.

More than half a million advance copies of the DVD were sold.

Some retailers opened overnight on Thursday to satisfy predicted demand.

The DVD includes 19 deleted scenes, special tours and a computer car game called the Forbidden Forest.

There are also interviews with the book's author J.K Rowling and scriptwriter Steve Kloves and director Chris Columbus.

In the film, Harry - played by Daniel Radcliffe - is warned not to return to Hogwarts by house-elf Dobby.

Harry ignores the threats and defeats the dark force hiding in the school's secret chamber, with the help of his friends Ron and Hermione.

The third film in the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), will be released next year.

The next book in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, is due in shops on 21 June.
