Oscars In Doubt

The Academy Awards ceremony is in doubt, with organisers yesterday conceding Hollywood's biggest night was now at the mercy of the winds of war.

As the final ballots closed on the Oscars, organisers reacted to a growing revolt among Hollywood stars to the traditional glitz of the ceremony, scrapping the red carpet parade.

Stars will pass straight from their limousines to the front door, without the stroll in front of screaming crowds and the much-anticipated couture parade.

While Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences president Frank Pierson said he was hopeful the ceremony would go ahead, it was too early to rule out a postponement, or even a cancellation.
