A bird? A plane? No, just a movie

THE Man of Steel could be landing in Queensland next year if talks on bringing the multi-million dollar production of the new Superman movie to the Gold Coast are successful.
Chief executive of Queensland film body the Pacific Film and TV Commission, Robin James, said yesterday negotiations had begun on the latest version of the superhero movie being filmed in the state.

He added the commission had not been involved in the talks and no contracts had been signed.

The Warner Bros. production, to be directed by American Brett Ratner (Red Dragon), is said to be looking at filming at Warner Roadshow studios on the Gold Coast, where a $US200 ($358 million) movie production of Peter Pan is under way until March. The studios' managing director, Michael Lake, could not be reached for comment yesterday.

The studio today is due to officially open two new sound stages built to help the facility meet the demand from large-scale foreign productions.

The Queensland Government loaned the studio $8 million to build the new filming areas, respectively 1600 and 2200sqm in size, plus two sets of production offices and two construction workshops, on condition it achieve a minimum level of production.

The name of the actor slated to play the invincible superhero was yet to he announced but Anthony Hopkins would play Superman's father, Ratner said while visiting Australia last month.
