Vin Diesel topples Mel Gibson from box office charts

Vin Diesel's new film has topped the box office in the US.

XXX pulled in $46 million over its first weekend, pushing Signs staring Mel Gibson into second place.
Spy Kids 2: The Island Of Lost Dreams was third with $17 million,.
Austin Powers In Goldmember was fourth, bringing its three-week total to $167.8 million.

The new Clint Eastwood film Bloodwork could only manage fifth place.

Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office company Exhibitor Relations, said the success of XXX showed Vin Diesel was on his way to becoming Hollywood's next big action star.

"This guy can open a movie, and he has strong appeal to teens and early 20-somethings, who are the target audience in the summer," he said.
