Austin Powers In Goldmember has broken box office records in America.

The film made $71.5 million during its first weekend in cinemas, a record for a comedy.

It's also the fifth highest opening for any movie. Spider-Man is top of the list with $114.8 million.

Goldmember made more in its opening weekend than the first Austin Powers movie did during all its time in American cinemas in 1997.

Last week's number one film The Road To Perdition dropped to second place with $11 million, followed closely by Stuart Little 2 with $10.7 million.
