Frears Is Gosford Park's Unsung Hero

British movie mogul Stephen Frears is the mystery man who stepped in at the last minute to make sure multi-Oscar nominated comedy Gosford Park (2002) was made.

The My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) director personally guaranteed to take care of the film's insurance problems after producers of the $19. 8 million (£13. 2 million) movie balked at spiralling cover costs.

The big problem was 76-year-old director Robert Altman's age, which made it prohibitively expensive to line up insurance for him.
