Shallow Hal's Warning To Male Chauvinists

SHALLOW HAL (2001) actor JACK BLACK hopes the movie will make men think again about the qualities they look for in women. The HIGH FIDELITY (2000) star reckons most men consider women on the basis of their looks - just like his character in the FARRELLY BROTHERS film.

He says, "Will a movie cure superficiality? We can only hope. Guys are much more into the visuals than girls, so I hope this gives them food for thought in a society that is so obsessed with image. "

Black, 32, almost didn't take the role - despite a reported $3 million (£2. 3 million) pay day - because he was concerned about the impact playing a male chauvinist pig would have on his future career.

He says, "I didn't want to play this pig. The good thing is that the Farrelly brothers and I talked a lot about making Hal likable. At first, he seems despicable, shallow and surface. But there is some counterbalance because he isn't a mean guy. Actually, I'm just so adorable that you can't help fall in love. " (CPBP/WN/BRC)
