Showgirls Cheered On By Prince At Moulin Rouge Premiere

A troupe of high-kicking, feather-plumed showgirls were greeted with a cheer by PRINCE CHARLES at the British premiere of MOULIN ROUGE (2001) yesterday (3SEP01). The 16 cancan dancers from the Paris, France club MOULIN ROUGE lined up for the British royal as he arrived in London's LEICESTER SQUARE.

Scantily clad in shimmering red sequined costumes, the 16 girls coyly greeted the Prince, who asked, "Are you going to do the cancan on stage?" Upon being told "We sure are," the royal responded, "Hooray!" Dancer JEAN BUCKLEY says of her regal encounter, "He was very charming and said we were very brave to be wearing what we were wearing,"

Charles went up to meet the stars of the film, including NICOLE KIDMAN and EWAN MCGREGOR, while the Moulin Rouge (2001) girls disappeared backstage to prepare for their curtain raising performance on the ODEON cinema's stage. (KW/WNWCAN)
