Alleged Kidnapping Shocker At Film Festival

The premiere of a Portuguese film at the VENICE FILM FESTIVAL has been overshadowed by controversy over an alleged kidnapping. Director TERESA VILLAVERDE's husband JON JOST has accused her of kidnapping their daughter, who appears in her movie WATER AND SALT.

American movie maker Jost has demanded the film be taken out of the Venice line-up, but festival organisers are refusing his request. Villaverde meanwhile, has cancelled an appearance at the film's press conference at the last minute for "personal reasons. "

The producer of her movie, PAULO BRANCO, says, "It is essential that her private life be distinct from the professional one. " Water and Salt, Villaverde's fourth film, is described as a woman's search for herself as she tries to come to terms with the end of her marriage. Its themes include the issue of children at risk of being taken from their mothers. (KW/WNWCAN)
