Despite a pasting from critics LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER (2001) has leapt to the top of the British box office over its opening weekend with a £3. 8 million ($4. 94million) haul.
Critics have lambasted Tomb Raider, based on the animated computer game, but it has already proved a huge hit in North America, where it has crossed the $100 million (£72 million) mark in receipts. Lara, played by ANGELINA JOLIE, sending animated fairytale SHREK to number two, according to Screen International.
Recent box office champion EVOLUTION, a sci-fi comedy that crams Earth's five billion year evolutionary process into a month, sat at number three. (PDD/WNWR)
