Pearl Harbor On Course For Around $80 Million

PEARL HARBOR (2001) has defied critics by remaining on course to make around $80 million (£62 million) during its first weekend on release.

The film, which has been derided by some reviewers, made an estimated $18. 3 million (£14 million) on Friday (25MAY01), it's first day in American cinemas.

It made double the amount of its nearest rival SHREK (2001), which took in just over $9. 6 million (£7. 4 million).

Experts predict Pearl Harbor (2001) finished the weekend with between $74 million (£57 million) and $82 million (£63 million).

However, Pearl Harbor is now not expected to break the MEMORIAL DAY (28MAY01) record which is held by Lost World: Jurassic Park, The (1997) - which made $90. 2 million (£69 million) in 1997.

One of the reasons Pearl Harbor will fall short is because of its three hour running time which limits the amount of times it can be shown during the day. Pearl Harbor opens in Britain on 1 June (01). (KW/WNWCAN)
