New movie SHREK (2001) is officially America's second-biggest animated hit after raking in more than $42. 3 million (£32. 53 million) at the box office over the weekend.

TOY STORY 2 (2000), which enjoyed a record-breaking $57 million (£43. 84 million) take in it's opening weekend in 1999, stays at number one, while 1994's LION KING, the (1994) slips to number three in the animated charts with a $40. 9 (£31. 46 million) opening weekend. (KL/WN/RP)
