Experts Pick Top Oscar Speeches

British cinema chain ODEON have compiled a list of the top ten OSCAR acceptance speeches.

The list celebrates unusual, sincere and downright odd thank yous. For this year's ceremony (25MAR01) organisers have imposed a 45 second limit.

Marketing boss RON HANLON said, "The speeches are fun to watch as you don't know who is going to say what. It's great fun betting on who'll give the best performance of the night." Among those singled out was CUBA GOODING JR.'s acceptance speech for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR in the sports movie JERRY MAGUIRE (1996). Gooding cried, "I love you Tom Cruise! I love you brother! I love everyone!"

Also featuring high on the list was GWYNETH PALTROW's bizarre thank you for BEST ACTRESS in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (1998) when she managed to cry yet not shed any tears and burbled on unintelligibly. Incidentally in October of that year Paltrow, 28, was voted "Most Stuck-up" in magazine MOVIELINE's 100 Most issue.

The top 10 runs as follows:
1 CUBA GOODING JR.
2 CHARLES CHAPLIN (HONORARY OSCAR, 1971)
3 ROBERTO BENIGNI (BEST ACTOR FOREIGN FILM, 1998) "I would like to be Jupiter and kidnap everybody and lie down in the ground making love to everybody"
4 GWYNETH PALTROW
5 JANE FONDA (BEST ACTRESS, 1972)
6 JAMES CAMERON (BEST DIRECTOR, 1997)
7 ROBIN WILLIAMS (BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR, 1997)
8 JESSICA YU (BEST SHORT SUBJECT DOCUMENTARY, 1997)
9 DANIEL DAY LEWIS (BEST ACTOR, 1989)
10 ROBERT DE NIRO (BEST ACTOR, 1980)
"Thanks Jake LaMotta, even though he's suing us").
