Russell Crowe: "I'm Glad I Flew Across The World To Lose"

RUSSELL CROWE jetted 10,000 miles (16093kilometres) to be beaten to a BAFTA award by a teenager - and he couldn't be happier.

The big-hearted GLADIATOR hunk, 36, lost out to BILLY ELLIOT star JAMIE BELL, 14, for the Best Actor award after flying over from Australia especially for last Sunday's ceremony (25FEB01), but insists it was worth the effort. He says, "If I was going to lose to anyone I'm happy I was beaten by Jamie because he's a great kid. "I came all the way from Down Under and it may seem like a long way to come for nothing, but I am representing my country and representing Gladiator and that's good enough for me."

Crowe adds, "
"It's incredible for a kid of 14 to win an award like this. I feel quite paternal towards Jamie and we are close. "He's got a talent and I took him aside for some tips before the awards. I told him to stay cool and not to get too wound up about it and he relaxed." (KW/WNTSU/PDD)
