ANTHONY HOPKINS broke up with fiance FRANCINE KAY because of his inability to get close to people.

The Welsh actor, who won an Oscar for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, admits he can't hold down a relationship. He adds, "I'm very good on my own. I'm not very good at any relationship with anyone. "I can't be locked up with anyone for too long, I want to move on and have some fun in my life. I like my own company and like to be left alone."

About his wife he explains, "We're still good friends and I think Jenni is a lovely woman. But I like living here in California and because she's remained in England, we've gradually drifted apart." And he hints that his personal solitude may also have an effect on his daughter ABIGAIL HARRISON. He says, "I like being on my own. I don't have any major friendships or relationships with people. I like being by myself so it makes it easy for me to play these parts like in REMAINS OF THE DAY and HANNIBAL LECTER. "I like acting self contained men because I'm good at that because I'm me."
