Jodie Foster Withdraws From Cannes Jury

LATEST: JODIE FOSTER has turned her back on the CANNES FILM FESTIVAL - she'll no longer be judging this year's Grand Jury Prize.

The Oscar-winning SILENCE OF THE LAMBS actress had agreed to head the jury at the 54th Cannes film festival, but has dropped out after being offered a leading movie role.

Foster is replacing NICOLE KIDMAN in DAVID FINCHER's THE PANIC ROOM after Kidman dropped out of the production with a knee injury. The actress says filming of the movie will conflict with the festival that runs from May 9-20 this year (01) - and although she's heartbroken, she has no choice. She says, "I hope with all my heart that this is only a delay and that I will be able, if the festival will do me the honour of asking me again, to be one day - and this time for sure - the president of the jury at a festival to which I owe so much."

When Foster accepted the title in January, she said that the awarding of Cannes' top prize, the PALME D'OR, to the 1976 MARTIN SCORSESE movie TAXI DRIVER was what had "truly launched" her career. (MCM/WNWCAN)
