Will IMAX Be Caught In Theater Chain Collapse?

Wall Street analysts are expressing concern that the wave of financial turmoil that has struck the country's leading exhibitors could come crashing down on giant-screen Imax as well, the New York Daily News reported today (Tuesday). "We've been increasingly concerned," Russ Solomon of Moody's told the newspaper. "If things get bad, they could get ugly in a hurry." Last week, Imax indicated that orders from exhibitors for Imax theaters have slowed and that some theater chains have not been able to pay rental fees on the Imax systems that are already in place. Imax stock has plummeted from a 52-week high of nearly $30 in August to $4.25 as of the close of trading Monday. "Things could get worse," Katherine Styponias of Prudential Securities told the Daily News. She expressed doubt about the company's ever realizing its stated goal -- to install an Imax theater in every multiplex.
