Scott Derrickson is set to return as the director of Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange sequel, which has Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role as the title character.
The studio, which had no comment, is about to start searching for a writer. Derrickson co-wrote the 2016 original with C. Robert Cargill and Jon Spaihts.
As well as confirming that the Doctor Strange helmsman will be back for the sequel – along with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Benedict Wong – the new piece also mentions that Marvel is planning to start production on the film in 2020, with a potential release in May 2021. And while this slot doesn’t seem set in stone just yet, fans have already picked up that the news lines up nicely with a report from several months ago saying that Disney has marked an untitled Marvel movie for release on May 7th of the same year.
Doctor Strange opened in 2016 with an $85 million dollar weekend domestic box office take and went on to gross $677 million worldwide.
The sequel is slated to hit theaters in 2021.
