Austin Powers 3: Goldmember (2002) - Synopsis

Austin Powers 3: Goldmember (2002) - synopsis imageSir Michael Caine plays British master spy Nigel Powers, Austin's father in this, Mike Myers third spoof on 007 and the rest.

The plot concerns the evil Goldmember who has conceived a plan to dominate the world, a plan that includes kidnapping Austin's father. The plot also includes a great deal of time traveling with Austin going back to 1975 to ask a former girlfriend for help.

As usual, Mike Myers plays most of the parts himself, including both Goldmember, Dr. Evil and of course Austin Powers. Additional cast will include Michael York, Richard Wagner and Fred Savage as well as Heather Graham, Danny DeVito, Gwyneth Paltrow, Quincy Jones, Kevin Spacey and Britney Spears in cameo parts.

Caine told William Keck about his new part in Entertainment Weekly: ''I turn out to be the greatest secret agent in the world, who taught him everything he knows. The assumption is he took after his father. So I have the wig, the glasses, the teeth, and the same attitude.''

Of course, Caine will indirectly be doing a parody on his own spy movies throughout the years, especially the Harry Palmer films, which partly inspired Mike Myers to do his spoof in the first place. Another echo from the past will be the appearance of Mini-cars in some spectacular chase scenes that might be intended as a spoof on Caine's other hit from the 60s, The Italian Job. Reportedly, a scene will be included where Caine tells Myers about the Mini: "it's not the size that matters, it's how you use it".

Originally, the Bond studio MGM wasn't all too keen on the similarities between the Goldmember title and their own Goldfinger. So, for a while the production company New Line Cinema had to call the project The Next Installment of Austin Powers, until a final settlement was made and MGM allowed New Line to use the Bondish title.

Love them or hate them, you can't call the Austin Powers movies anything but...original. Anyway, Caine in this kind of setting should be pretty hilarious and I for one am looking forward to this summer. Austin Powers in Goldmember opens in the US and the UK on July 26th, 2002.
