Say It Isn't So (2001) - Synopsis

say it isn't so header

SAY IT ISN'T SO puts a comically depraved spin on a classic love story: Boy (Chris Klein) meets girl (Heather Graham); Boy falls in love (and has wild, non-stop sex) with girl; Boy loses girl . .. when, as a result of the ultimate case of mistaken identity, come to believe they are brother and sister! When the lovesick young man - whom everyone thinks is after some taboo thrills - learns that it really isn't so, he must race across the country to stop her from marrying another guy.

From Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly comes another shameless romantic farce, SAY IT ISN'T SO. The new comedy is produced by the Farrellys, along with Bradley Thomas. Longtime Farrelly colleague J. B. Rogers makes his directorial debut on the feature, working from an original screenplay from Peter Gaulke and Gerry Swallow.

Heather Graham (Boogie Nights (1997), Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)) and Chris Klein (Election (1999), American Pie (1999)) play the beleaguered couple who, as a result of some faulty detective work, come to think "it" is so. The film also stars two-time Academy Award winner Sally Field (Norma Rae, Places In the Heart (1984)) as Jo's foul-mouthed, white-trash mother, Valdine; veteran character actor Richard Jenkins (Me, Myself & Irene (2000) Snow Falling on Cedars (1999)) as Jo's bedridden father, Walter; Orlando Jones (Double Take (2001), Replacements, the (2000) as Dig McCaffey, a goofy double amputee pilot who helps Gilly on his transcontinental trek to find Jo; and Eddie Cibrian ("Living Out Loud," NBC's "Third Watch") as Jo's new betrothed, shady millionaire Jack Mitchelson.

The production's creative team includes cinematographer Mark Irwin, CSC/ASC, production designer Sidney J. Bartholomew Jr. and film editor Larry Madaras, all of whom worked on previous Farrelly films. Makeup effects designer Tony Gardner also reunites with the Farrellys, following his prosthetic creations on There's Something About Mary (1998) and Me, Myself & Irene (2000) and Lisa Jensen joins the team as the film's costume designer.

In SAY IT ISN'T SO, Chris Klein's Gilly Noble is an animal shelter employee in rural Indiana who, as the story begins, hires a private detective to find his birth mother. The noble Gilly is also on the lookout for that one special girl with whom he might share the rest of his life.

Gilly meets and falls in love with a charming, beautiful - and klutzy - hairdresser, Heather Graham's Jo Wingfield. A passionate, physical romance develops before the sleazy private eye reveals the identity of Gilly's real mother: Valdine Wingfield - Jo's mother. Which they mistakenly think means....

After Jo relocates to Oregon, the lovesick Gilly learns that Jo really isn't so, and he frantically pursues his one true amour. Along his journey, he gets help from double amputee Dig McCaffey, a pilot with a leg up on the comic action. But complicating matters for Gilly is Valdine, who conceals a secret from her daughter to insure that Jo's planned wedding to a millionaire Jack Mitchelson goes off without a hitch.
