Ratcatcher (1999) - Details

Takes place during the dustmen's strike in the 1970's in the most run-down part of Glasgow. James accidentally drowns his friend in the filthy canal behind the housing estate. he tells nobody, and nobody seems to care. His Da is more interested in football, and his Ma is trying to keep the landlords away. He becomes over-run with feelings of guilt, and this leads him into a downward spiral. NB: North American theatres had subtitles due to the uncompromisingly heavy Glasgow accents. Also, the children in the film are children, not child actors which means their performances are as realistic as any trained actor, if not more so. Synopsis by Dam Hoyle
