Warlords, The (2007) - Synopsis

Inspired by a true event, The Warlords brings Asia’s top actors (Jet Li, Andy Lau, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Xu Jinglei) together with an incredible production team for a new epic hero film.

Set in the mid-1800s the film follows General Pang’s (Li) rise to power with the help of his two bandit blood brothers Zhao Er-Hu (Lau) and Jiang Wu-Yang (Kaneshiro) during a time of corrupt rule and political unrest under the Qing dynasty. Initially Pang plans to end war and restore peace to the land, but corrupted by his hunger for power, Pang soon stops at nothing to eliminate his enemies and achieve his goal, including massacring 4,000 prisoners of war who Zhao vowed to protect. The brotherhood collapses and Pang’s ruthlessness and past betrayals ultimately lead to his demise at the hands of an assassin – his beloved brother Jiang.

Following the success in China of their 2005 ravishing, romantic extravaganza Perhaps Love, producer Andre Morgan and director-producer Peter Chan team up to bring us the $40 million heroic tale. The Warlords is not a remake of Director Chang Cheh’s classic Blood Brothers.
