Raising Victor Vargas : Movie Review

"Raising Victor Vargas" is a sweet film, a label not usually associated with New York indies. But this first feature by Peter Sollett is sweet in ways both comic and insightful. With a dull title and no-name cast, the film will require good reviews and marketing savvy to pick up steam in theatrical release. Nevertheless, it should enjoy a modest payoff and certainly makes a lively cable item. Goldwyn and Fireworks acquired domestic distribution for this charmer at festival's end.

It's the hot summer in the Dominican community in the Lower East Side. Victor (Victor Rasuk), 16, has just spotted the girl of his dreams, Judy (Judy Marte), at a public swimming pool with her best friend Melonie (Melonie Diaz). He and his pal Harold (Kevin Rivera) try to pick the girls up but are immediately rebuffed.
