The Shallows (2016) - Movie Poster
Medical student Nancy Adams (Blake Lively) is getting over the loss of her mother. She decides to travel to a secluded beach for some much-needed solace. So much for a high concept set up. As crazy horror movies would have us believe, this sort of thing does happen and then these silly people go surfing alone. Naturally a great white shark attacks and she is injured and stranded on a rock away from the shoreline as the deadly shark circles her waiting to attack.

Ever since Jaws, films about great white sharks have been popular with movie goers. And now we have sharks in tornadoes and pre-historic sharks as well!

Lively lives up to her name by being up for the role and ready for an action packed movie. It's a B-Movie with an A-List actress. Naturally her acting skills are up to the task and she's ably assisted by Brett Cullen (from LOST) and the rest of her cast mates who flit in and out of the action as Lively takes up the majority of screentime.

The direction is solid and the film is energetic and fast paced. The Shallows is enjoyable with elements of both gore and humour and dispite the ending letting the rest of the film down a little it's still a fun ride whilst it lasts.
