Dame Helen is on sparkling form here in this true-life tale. As a Jewish refugee from Austria, Maria Altmann, long settled in LA, she is by turns fiercely determined, slyly manipulative and touchingly vulnerable as she wrestles with past injustices from her time in war torn Europe. The famous painting of her attractive aunt (Traue) was seized by the Nazis and now resides pride of place in Austria with the stern protection of the country's government. Her efforts to have the painting back in her care and on show in America take up the bulk of this watchable tale, the dramatic machinations going all the way up to the Supreme Court.
